* "The Coming of the Mormons is one of many volumes from the Landmark Book series. This volume is an overview of Brigham Young and the Mormon trek to Utah. The leadership of Brigham Young and the challenges facing the Mormons before, during, and after their journey on the Mormon Trail to the Great Salt Lake in 1847 are the major themes of the book. The Mormon Battalion in the Mexican War, the war on the crickets, Mormon relations with the Native Americans, and how the Mormons transformed the Great Salt Lake area with irrigation are among the topics presented. We also learn about Brigham Young's meetings with Jim Bridger (who gave Young information about the Great Salt Lake) and Samuel Brannan (who urged Young to settle in California). Very little is said about Mormon theology. Though written for elementary school students, adults will find this book to be a concise introduction to one of the major events of America's westward movement."
